Oedipus Rex, medical ethics & more as LTL heads into week 11
/The eleventh week of the 2021 Winter/Spring Session of Lifetime Learning at Snow Library will include the following new and ongoing courses. Most classes are recorded and can be viewed at your convenience.
Tuesday, April 13 from 10:30 a.m. to noon, Peggy Kelleher presents the final class in her popular three class course, “Murder and Mayhem in the Ancient World (And You Think Your Family Was Dysfunctional?).” Learn about the family chaos and carnage caused by curses, oracles, and prophecies as depicted in the works Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, and others. This class explores Oedipus (“No one loves you more than me, mom!”).
On Tuesday afternoon from 1:30 to 3 p.m., Marc Silverstein, MD FACP, explores selected medical cases that illustrate some of the ethical principles and considerations that guide ethical choices in the time of coronavirus.
And on Tuesday evening, from 5 to 6:30 p.m., Steve and Jeff Bornemeier present the third class in a four-part course titled “Novels and Ideas: Parables,” leading a discussion of “Bullet Park” by John Cheever, published in 1969.
On Wednesday, April 14 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Joseph Marchio, assistant conductor of the Cape Symphony, continues his course on "American’s Musical Trailblazers: Charles Ives and Aaron Copland.” Ives's musical compositions were highly experimental, and much of his art was not heard until after his death. Europe, which was unimpressed with the American musical tradition, quickly took note of Ives's profound music. Aaron Copland, who came on the scene following Ives, continued to build upon Ives's rich musical tradition and would ultimately give America its own musical voice by incorporating folk, jazz, and American sacred musical elements in his concert works.
On Friday, April 16 from 10:30 a.m. to noon, Stephen Munroe presents part 3 of his five-class course on “The Molecular Revolution in Biology and Medicine.” The class will focus on mapping the structure of genes and decoding our genome.
